ASK LISA – FORGIVENESS FIRST

How does one reconcile with the past wrongs of parents and continue to be honorable to them?

How does one reconcile with the past wrongs of parents and continue to be honorable to them?

Good question. The truth sets you free – not sugar-coating reality. It is okay to view what was done to you through the lens of God’s standard. For example, say you had a mom who yelled a lot. God would want mothers to have control over their emotions. I would work through the forgiveness piece first. Forgive the offense of yelling but also the fruit of the offense and all the ways growing up with a mom who yelled affected you (I don’t like confrontation, conflict terrifies me, I don’t trust Holy Spirit, etc.). After forgiveness has been worked through, I encourage you to grab a significant memory of your mom not managing her emotions well and ask Jesus to show you what was happening inside her heart. What did she need at that time? How did God see her when she was yelling at you? This is where compassion comes in (it is impossible to have compassion for someone without forgiveness first). And then, we begin to let go of the pain and make healthy choices for our family, not out of judgment but a desire to have our children experience a greater measurement of His goodness.
